objective
To develop a poster that persuade viewers to attend an events. The poster will communicate the meaning of a person's work contribution.
For this project, I chose Harriet Beecher Stowe under the headline "Dealmakers
and Dreamers."
and Dreamers."
research
Stowe was an influential abolitionist in the mid-1800s who advocated for the rights of slaves during the Civil War. Her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin inspired rebellion amongst the slaves. Stowe and her family helped harbor slaves in her Cincinnati home during the operation of the
underground railway.
underground railway.
Abraham Lincoln once said to Stowe, "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war."
ideation
Starting with letter compositions, we researched our person and used physical materials to create compositions to express meanings of words related to our person. After this, we did free play and rule based play.
Throughout the ideation process, I struggled a lot finding a solid idea that expressed Beecher Stowe's meaning and contribution. One phrase I came up with to encapsulate her contribution was "words that wrote a movement."
iteration
I played with some key components I wanted to include in my final poster, such as the American flag, pages from Uncle Tom's Cabin, and the quote from Abraham Lincoln.
final posters
In my final posters, I combined text and image to create a composition I felt was reminiscent of Stowe's work. I tied in images from Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin and emphasized the words, "little woman," as Lincoln used them as a derogatory term towards Stowe.
